About the University of Hawai’i Foundation:

The University of Hawaiʻi Foundation was established in 1955 to encourage private support for the University of Hawaiʻi. Today it is the central fundraising organization for the UH System and is contracted by the Board of Regents to be the sole provider of fundraising and alumni services. In addition to fundraising, the Foundation manages more than 7000 gift accounts for the benefit of the university and its students.

The UH Foundation is a private, institutionally related corporation designated as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service. It is a legally separate entity from the University of Hawaiʻi, the UH Alumni Association, and all other UH affiliates. However, the UH Foundation works closely with these organizations, as well as with others in the community, exclusively for the benefit of the university.

Position Summary:

As part of the University of Hawaii Foundation Office of Alumni Relations team, the Associate Director of Alumni Communications and Marketing serves as a strategic leader responsible for developing and executing integrated communications and marketing initiatives that strengthen engagement with our alumni worldwide. This role is a key part of the university’s alumni relations team and works in close partnership with advancement, central communications, and schools/colleges to elevate alumni storytelling, promote engagement opportunities, and foster lifelong connections between alumni and the institution.

Associate Vice President of Alumni and Community Engagement

Duties & Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning and Leadership

  • Lead the planning, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive alumni communications and marketing strategy that aligns with institutional priorities and alumni engagement goals.
  • Serve as a senior communications advisor within the alumni relations team, collaborating with leadership to shape messaging strategy and outreach priorities.
  • Ensure consistent and brand-aligned alumni messaging across all channels and platforms.

Content Development and Editorial Oversight

  • Oversee the creation and dissemination of high-impact content across email, web, social media, print, and video.
  • Lead the editorial strategy for alumni communications, including newsletters, campaign messaging, web stories, and digital storytelling.
  • Supervise the creation of content that highlights alumni success, university impact, volunteer opportunities, events, and philanthropic initiatives.

Digital Marketing and Engagement

  • Manage digital marketing efforts targeting alumni audiences, including segmented email campaigns, digital advertising, and social media.
  • Monitor and optimize campaign performance using analytics, A/B testing, and audience insights.
  • Expand the use of digital engagement tools and platforms to enhance global alumni reach and participation.

Team and Project Management

  • Supervise freelancers and vendors as needed, ensuring high-quality output and efficient workflows.
  • Manage communications timelines, budgets, and production schedules for alumni campaigns and initiatives.
  • Coordinate cross-campus collaborations with schools, departments, and units to amplify alumni-focused initiatives.

Partnerships and Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues throughout development and across UH to identify new prospects and strategically cultivate alumni, parents and friends.
  • Partner with Development, Annual Giving, and Events teams to support philanthropic and engagement campaigns.
  • Act as liaison between Alumni Relations and Central Marketing/Communications to ensure alignment with university-wide brand and messaging.
  • Serve as communications lead for key alumni events and initiatives, including reunions, homecoming, and digital engagement campaigns.

Analytics and Reporting

  • Define KPIs and produce regular reports on the effectiveness of alumni communications strategies.
  • Use data to guide decision-making and continuously improve communications outreach.
  • Ensure alumni database accuracy in collaboration with advancement services and data teams.

Meet annual and campaign goals set by UH Foundation in coordination with UH. These include goals related to the number of visits and discovery visits.

  • Undertake other duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An appreciation for and understanding of public higher education, and the ability to advance and communicate the University of Hawai`i’s distinctive identity and mission to external and internal constituencies, especially alumni.

  • Ability to plan and implement programmatic, organizational, financial strategies and goals.

  • Minimum of two to three years of successful experience in constituent engagement, alumni relations, communications or related field.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with management, peers, customers, and volunteers.

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are necessary, with a philosophy of teamwork and hands-on implementation.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with various campus and UHF partners, volunteers, and constituent groups.

  • This position at times requires evening and weekend work.

  • A passion for higher education, and the University of Hawai`i in particular.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Graduates of the University of Hawai`i are encouraged to apply.
